Critical Response # 4 Uralskaya ryabinushka

(Uralskaya Ryabinushka)
Artist: Anna Litvinenko
Rhythm: The rhythm is slow and loose
Meter: 3/4
Tempo: Andante
The song is about how a woman goes to a rowan tree because she likes two men who are her friends, but she doesn't know who to give her heart to. She asks the rowan tree to give her advice on who to choose since she tried to ask the starts but they didn't answer. Summer and Autumn passed since she asked the stars and it is now Winter, but she still doesn't know who she should be together with and thus went to the rowan tree in the mountains, a place the three of them visit frequently.
The song features several of the traditional Russian instruments such as an accordion, several balalaikas and a flute. Those three instruments were the some of the few most popular instruments used to make traditional Russian music. The song reminds me of the many old fashioned animated movies I saw back in Estonia. The movies weren't as colorful and bright as today's cartoons, but they had interesting plots that always featured either magical items and mythical Russian beings (like Baba Yaga, swamp monster or the three warriors) or had talking animals and objects (such as paintbrushes, pictures or a wolf).

  1. I love the music, but not her voice!

    1. I agree, the voice is rather unpleasant, but it portrays the traditional style of Russian singing rather well.
